Kernel of Truth

The corncob is a familiar object, common and overlooked. Yet upon closer inspection, this seemingly common grain reveals its extraordinary structure. Three-dimensional space collapses into a pixilated matrix of jewel-like color. The encased cobs in this piece are at once preserved as oddities of nature, and are destroyed; their fertility sanded away in pursuit of formal beauty. Our modern relationship with this ancient crop mirrors the complex and subversive manipulation that my own variety has undergone.

Industrial agriculture has toyed and tinkered with many important crops, but none as iconic as corn. Today corn manifests in an array of artificial varieties: fillers, sweeteners, and fuel.  If we look closely, past the kernels of delicious summer BBQs, the true essence may present itself. Once a source of nourishment and life, corn now manifests as an accurate and direct weapon of attack. These bullets retain the memory of corn’s origin while bearing its modern brass armor.
